The Sleaze and the Beauty--Beauty and the Sleaze, you might call it. A theme we're looking at in our documentary Sleaze Nation. How can you have so much Sleaze with so much Beauty? Bad alongside good. A constant in human affairs dating to the earliest civilzations. The decadent Ancients, the Greeks and Romans. A prime example of the consequences of sensual excess--give yourself up to the gratification gained from sexual and violent pleasures and sooner or later it'll come back to damage you, wreck you and the society that's indulging.
But does it apply in our 21St Century world? Millions and millions enjoy slaughter and sex and vulgarity and macho goonishness--think Smackdown--in the comfort of their entertainment delivery system--cellphone, Blackberry, computer, TV. Make a Saw torture porn scene your screen saver and what's the big deal? Great movie, love the way the guy gets his face torn to pieces in that scene, hear Saw VII is out in the fall. And...so what?
Are we getting away with being a Sleaze Nation? Embracing the vile and violent while we go on our merry way? What are the consequences to the society at large of millions choosing to be entertained by Sleaze?
And what of the Beauty all around us as a counter to the Sleaze? A complex discussion we hope to shed light on with dozens of dozens of interviews--torture porn fans exiting the Metroplex, Sleaze Diva enthusiats singing along to let's-get-drunk songs, Grand Theft Auto players enjoying blood-splattering killings at the controls of the video game player.
And we'll also interview those embracing Beauty--a thousand manifestations of Beauty--from a sunset (yes, sunsets are beautiful), to a piece of music (no Sleaze Divas need apply), to an every-day gesture of kindness (random acts of kindness, yes).
